Labor Day weekend usually marks the end of the stocking of rainbow trout at many Utah waters, but popular spots should be stocked for the holiday.

As the weather begins to cool after Labor Day, fishing often improves as fish become more active. That said, some reservoirs are so low in water elevation at the end of the summer that boat launching can be difficult. For example, low water at Willard Bay and Utah Lake has created problems.

Looking at the latest Division of Wildlife Resources' fishing report, which can be viewed in its entirety at http://wildlife.utah.gov/hotspots/reports_lp.php, it looks like angling could be good in several places during the holidays.

High mountain lakes such as those along the Mirror Lake Highway, in the Boulder Mountain, in Beaver Canyon or in the Uintas should be decent this time of year.

Fly fishing on rivers seems to be good with Blacksmith Fork anglers having good luck using hoppers and dry flies and Green River anglers experiencing fair to good dry fly angling and good fishing with streamers and nymphs.

Strawberry Reservoir fishing has been best early in the day. Flaming Gorge anglers have been enjoying good success trolling for rainbows and lake trout or fishing along shore for smaller smallmouth bass.

At Lake Powell, striped bass boilers are increasing with the best fishing between 6 and 7:30 a.m. or after 6 p.m.

Bear Lake fishing has been good, but has been slow in recent days. East Canyon Reservoir is rated as "very good", especially in the early and late hours. Use bait from shore there.

Biologists say Tiger Muskie at Joe's Valley Reservoir should start hitting as the weather cools. Some Scofield anglers report decent trout fishing trolling deep. Fish Lake has been good to excellent with trolling best for trout and bait fishing decent for perch. Panguitch Lake angling has been fair.
