Just a few days in front of a holiday weekend, National Park Service officials have closed a popular Lake Powell beach Monday after a moored boat leaked a tankful of fuel into the water near Wahweap marina.

A park visitor reported a diesel smell late afternoon and officials soon discovered a neon sheen on the lake's surface covering an area of about a half mile by a half mile, according to Christiana Admiral, the park's chief of interpretation.

The spill occurred on the Arizona side of the lake, but winds pushed most of the slick into Utah, according to a report in the Utah Department of Environmental Quality's spill database. Contamination reached Wahweap Beach — a busy recreational destination near Big Water.

Admiral said the beach closure is temporary, but was not sure when it would be re-opened.

Crews from NPS, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the park concessionaire responded to the spill Monday.

While the matter remains under investigation by park rangers, Admiral declined to name the owner of the boat implicated in the spill.
