Road debris is being blamed for a fuel spill that closed down northbound Interstate 15 in the Midvale area for much of Thursday afternoon.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said the spill, estimated at 50-60 gallons, came from a semi-trailer rig's side fuel tank. The tank was punctured when the big rig struck a bed box spring that had fallen onto the roadway near 7200 South.

Hazmat crews were called to the scene.

Traffic was impacted until about 4 p.m..

Royce said the diesel fuel made for a particularly dangerous situation, since it renders asphalt road surfaces especially slippery. "We want to make sure we don't have any secondary accidents as a result," he said.

No injuries were reported.

The source of the box spring was under investigation.
