A man who confronted a car thief, only to then be run over with his own car, had been released from the hospital as of Thursday.

Salt Lake City police Detective Veronica Montoya said the man, who had been briefly listed in critical condition after the incident on Wednesday afternoon near 1300 East and 2000 South, was later determined to have suffered less-serious injuries. Once stabilized and cleared by doctors, he was released to continue his recovery at home.

The victim and his wife were riding in another car when they spotted the stolen 1999 Subaru Outback, and when both vehicles stopped at a traffic signal, the man jumped out to confront the thief.

The suspect attempted a U-turn to get away, hit a curb and a trash can and then struck and dragged the victim a short distance before speeding away northbound on 1300 East.

Police found the stolen Subaru a short time later, abandoned 700 East and 1400 South.

Police continue to look for the suspect, described as a while male, 25-30 years old, with a thin build and very pale complexion. Anyone with information is asked to call SLCPD at 801-799-3000.
