A 16-year-old girl died Sunday after she was thrown from a SUV, then hit by a second vehicle while she lay in the road.

The Utah Highway Patrol identified the girl as Stephanie Villegas, from West Jordan.

She was lying down in the backseat of a SUV, with her parents in the front seats, heading north on Interstate 15 in Millard County. The highway gradually curves to the right near mile post 143, a few miles south of Kanosh. But when the SUV reached the curve about 2:35 a.m., it continued straight and went off the road, according to the UHP.

"The driver steered sharply to the right, causing the car to begin sliding," UHP reported. "The vehicle began to roll just prior to coming back onto the paved portion of the road."

Villegas was thrown from the SUV and landed in the center lane.

A second vehicle started slowing down at the sight of the debris, but "being unaware of [the girl] lying in the middle of roadway," hit her, according to UHP.

A passerby tried to offer aid to Villegas, but she died at the scene.

Villegas' parents were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
