An arrest has been made in the Sunday night shooting of BYU football recruit Charles West.

Coppell (Texas) police said Tuesday that they have arrested Montay Kentrall Howard, 18, in connection with the shooting at a middle school in town while West, also 18, was playing basketball with some friends.

West signed to play for BYU on Feb. 4, but was arrested a few days later and eventually charged with aggravated assault for an incident that occurred at his home in late January in which West allegedly raped a woman at knifepoint.

The police said Tuesday the dispute between Howard and West was over money and that the two acquaintances had fought earlier Sunday.

Howard allegedly opened fire on West, hitting him once in the left bicep. The Coppell High football star was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

According to the arrest report, Howard was arrested "without incident" at 1:30 p.m. CT at his home in Coppell on Monday.

Howard is now in jail and has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony.

West's status at BYU remains unclear; BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall said at the school's media day on June 24 that there is no new news to report on West's situation.
