Emergency crews responded Thursday morning to a hot air balloon crash in Provo.

No serious injuries were initially reported in the 7 a.m. incident, which involved a pink, piggy bank-shaped balloon participating in the Balloon Fest event, which is part of Utah County's America's Freedom Festival celebration this week.

Provo Fire Battalion Chief Kevin Paxton said the balloon was one of more than a dozen that took flight from Fox Field, N. 300 West, Thursday morning.

The balloon, sponsored by the Bank of American Fork, was about 300 yards in the air when the basket of another balloon passed overhead, accidentally tearing a hole in the first balloon's canopy.

"The pilot did a great job controlling the descent," Paxton said, noting that a small fire resulted when the pilot ignited his burners to slow his landing.

The balloon came partially to rest on trees and a fence line in a field near Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, just missing nearby power lines. The flames were quickly extinguished.

The pilot was treated on the scene for minor burns to the neck but no other injuries were reported.
