It's been a rollercoaster season for Pleasant Grove's Payton Henry — except the ride continuously hovered at its climax. The low moments were sparsely scattered, and after helping the Vikings capture their first baseball championship in 17 years, the junior catcher, who is verbally tied to UNLV, has been named the Utah Gatorade Player of the Year.

"It's a big award. It's really an honor because it's showing that all the hard work is paying off," Henry said. "I'm extremely blessed to be able to get things like this."

Henry's catching talent behind the dish is often overshadowed by his ability to produce offense. Known as one of the premier power hitters in the state, Henry finished with an average of .527 at the plate, with 48 hits, 46 RBIs, 11 doubles, and nine home runs, while only committing two fielding errors the entire season. Henry also served as PG's fireball closer on the mound.

"Buckets and buckets and buckets of cage balls," said Henry when asked what makes him difficult to throw against as a hitter. "That's really it. My dad has been throwing to me, I feel like since I could walk. He's always been pushing me. I want to be in the cages, and I want to be a better hitter. I've already got goals for next season."

The rosters for the 71st annual Utah High School All-Star baseball games have been announced. The Class 3A All-Star game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lindquist Field in Ogden on Friday, while the Class 4A (noon) and the Class 5A (3:30 p.m.) are scheduled to follow on Saturday.
