Police say a 14-year-old boy was killed in an auto-pedestrian accident late Wednesday night in the southwestern Utah community of Hurricane.

Hurricane police Sgt. Brandon Buell on Thursday identified the victim as Gavin Pryor, who lived in Hurricane and attended Hurricane Middle School.

Pryor was one of four juveniles walking south on 700 West when a northbound Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, driven by a 26-year-old man, drifted toward the group. The victim was hit, while the other three youths escaped injury.

"The driver stated he had reached for an item of food just prior to the crash," Buell stated. "Investigators found the point of impact to be approximately six feet from the curb."

No citations were immediately issued. The driver of the vehicle has been cooperative with the investigation, Buell said.

The boy's body was turned over to the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Counseling was to be offered for students and staff at the Hurricane High School Counseling Office on Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., police reported.
