The new era at Lone Peak has officially begun.

David Evans, an assistant at BYU-Hawaii, has been hired to replace Quincy Lewis, Lone Peak principal Rhonda Bromley confirmed with The Salt Lake Tribune early Friday morning.

"I'm confident that David will continue the standard of excellence that we already have here, and can move our program forward," Bromley said. "His style of coaching is very similar — a very upbeat, quick style. The other thing that is really impressive about David is how important education is to him."

Evans served as an assistant coach at BYU-Hawaii during the 2000-01 season, and again from 2011-14. During his playing days, he led the state of California in scoring at Ponderosa High in Sacramento before enrolling at BYU-Hawaii, where he was named a three-time All-American. He played professionally in Norway and England.

Evans, who has a degree in exercise and sports science and a master's in sports coaching, will teach full-time in addition to his coaching responsibilities.

Replacing Lewis is a difficult task. In 12 seasons, Lewis, who took an assistant coaching position at BYU, led the Knights to 250-45 overall record, with seven state championships and 10 region titles.

"He and Quincy have known each other for years. Quincy will be a great mentor for him as he transitions into this new position," Bromley said. "Quincy wasn't part of the panel, but I did certainly turn to him. He had great things to say about all of the coaches [who applied]. He was a good sounding board."
