I'm not the world's most emotional person, but I fear I may shed a tear or two tonight.

It's the finale of the "Late Show with David Letterman" (10:35 p.m.,, CBS/Ch. 2), and I'm both looking forward to it and dreading it. Looking forward to it because Letterman has been nothing short of fantastic in the weeks leading up to his retirement; dreading it because, well, I've been watching Letterman for more than 30 years and there will be a hole in my TV-watching life without him.

Yes, that sounds sort of silly even to me as a write it. My own personal contacts with Letterman were brief — a few chances to ask some questions; a trip to the Ed Sullivan Theater to see a "Late Show" taping.

(And, yes, it really is cold in there.)

But I've spent more time watching Dave on TV than I have with even my closest friends. (Do you see your closest friends five nights a week?) He's made made me laugh — a lot.

There are lots of good late-night hosts working right now — Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, James Corden, Seth Meyers, Larry Wilmore and (for a few more weeks) Jon Stewart. And I'm looking forward to the debut of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" in September.

But there will never be another David Letterman.

Thanks, Dave. Enjoy your retirement.
