In his 10 seasons as BYU's head basketball coach, Dave Rose has watched two of his assistants move on to other Division I head coaching jobs. Dave Rice got the UNLV job and now Mark Pope has the Utah Valley job. Former BYU assistant Heath Schroyer became the head coach at Wyoming six years after leaving Provo, but Schroyer was an assistant at BYU from 1997—2001 under Steve Cleveland, not Rose.

In my 30-minute sit-down interview with Rose on Monday, he talked about Pope getting the UVU job.

"I am really happy for Mark," Rose said. "He did a wonderful job for us, and for him to have this opportunity, I am excited for him. I am excited for him to be close, and to actually be able to follow him and watch him. It will be great for UVU. I am just excited for him and his family.

And then he wanted to get Cody [Fueger] to go with him, and get Cody on the floor coaching.

So our two jobs have been posted, and they are open for a certain period of time. Once they close, we will take the applicants and then start the process. Hopefully, within 3-4 weeks, we will have them filled. It just takes some time. Posting closes this week.

I have obviously talked to a lot of people who have inquired. But the formal interview process goes through our human resources office and it all takes place once the job closes and you have your list of qualified applicants. I don't know how many have applied so far. But from previous years, there will be quite a few. "

Rose chuckled when I asked if there have been any "surprise" applicants.

"I would never go into a law firm and ask a lawyer for a job, because I don't know anything about the law," he said. "But a lot of people think they know a lot about basketball."

In case you want to throw your hat into the ring, the deadline for the assistant coaching position is today (Tuesday) and the director of basketball operations position closes on Wednesday.

What is Rose looking for in an assistant?

"Any time you go through this process, you find guys that are really intriguing to you, and guys that you would like to hire, but you don't hire because you have to pick just one guy," he said. "In that process, we have found quite a few guys who are intriguing to us. Then there are a lot of other guys looking to make a move for one reason or another. The most important thing for me is to go through the process and get an actual pool of applicants, and then go from there."

At his press conference when he got the job, Pope said he would like to get BYU on the Wolverines' schedule.

I asked Rose if he wants to play UVU. A few years ago, I was told by a high-level BYU administrator that the Cougars would never play UVU as long as Dick Hunsaker was the coach because Hunsaker would not release UVU star Ryan Toolson to BYU when the nephew of Danny Ainge expressed an interest in transferring to BYU after a church mission to Guatemala.

Here's Rose's reply:

"We talked about it when Mark [Pope] was considering taking the job. For me, we kind of have to see where the schedule all fits in. The preseason schedule for us now is really important. It has always been important, but it is really important to make sure that we have the right opportunities to build that thing the right way. I think there is a place for that game. I don't know where that is, or when that is. But the most important thing is to make sure that when you get to the end of the season and look back, you can say, 'hey, our schedule was good enough to get us in the [NCAA] Tournament.'"

"We just have to take advantage. I think that's how we felt this year, is that our schedule was good enough to get us a really good seed in the tournament. If we had taken advantage of a few more games, it would have been better for us. That's what we hope to do every year. But I think there's a place for that game somewhere.

I just want to make sure our preseason schedule is balanced, and balanced in the right way with enough really impactful games for us, where it is not outweighed one way or another. And UVU will be a tough game, because you obviously understand that it will be a real emotional game, and you want to make sure it is balanced with the rest of your schedule."
