Springville boys' basketball was the unwanted algae attached underneath Region 8's boat when Chris Kitchen inherited the program for the 2004-05 season.

"One of the things people don't know, is the five years prior to us taking over, Springville was 7-96 over that five-year period," Kitchen said.

Kitchen eventually guided the Red Devils to the postseason in his fourth season, unleashing a stretch of seven straight playoff appearances, including advancing to the Class 4A semifinals in 2014. But after 11 seasons, Springville informed Kitchen of its desire for another voice, officially releasing the long-time coach last week with an overall record of 125-118.

"We felt we really took the program from being at rock bottom and building up to be respectable," Kitchen said. "The principal wanted to take the program in a different direction, is all I was told."

Kitchen is uncertain about returning to coaching. An empty-nester, he noted his intention to travel with his wife: "Her and I are going to spend some time and enjoy each other's company."

Although his departure was involuntary, Kitchen expressed his appreciation for his time at Springville.

"My level of gratitude for the opportunity I had to coach at Springville is incalculable," Kitchen said. "I'm so grateful for the years, for my assistant coaches and their families. I'm grateful for the citizens, for the players and those players' parents. It's been a wonderful opportunity."
