Only two players were nominated for the West Coast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week award after last week's action, perhaps a sign that everybody knew BYU's Kyle Collinsworth pretty much had it wrapped up.

Collinsworth was named the WCC's PoW for the fourth time this season on Monday after leading the Cougars to wins over Portland and Gonzaga.

The only other player nominated was Pepperdine's Stacy Davis.

Collinsworth averaged 17.5 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 2.5 steals as the Cougars kept their NCAA Tournament hopes alive with the big wins.

Collinsworth has now won the award more than any other WCC player this season.

At Portland, Collinsworth totaled 15 points, six boards, 11 assists and three steals for his 13th double-double of the season. With BYU trailing 41-33 at the half, Collinsworth led a second half rally with seven points, five boards, nine assists and two steals as the Cougars outscored the Pilots 49-28 to claim the win.

In Spokane on Saturday, Collinsworth scored a game-high 20 points to go with eight boards, three assists, one block and two steals as the Cougars defeated No. 3/2 Gonzaga, BYU's first win against a top 3 team since defeating No. 2 UCLA in 1981. He scored eight of BYU's last 11 points, including a three-point play that gave the Cougars a 69-61 lead with 2:52 remaining and a layup with 17 seconds left to keep BYU up five at 71-66.

If you haven't already, be sure to read Tribune columnist Kurt Kragthorpe's take on whether BYU belongs in the NCAA Tournament field, and how defense has been a catalyst in the Cougars' six-game winning streak.

I'm an AP voter this year of the men's college basketball poll, but I didn't put BYU among my top 25 when I filled out my ballot on Sunday night. I considered it, but went with Murray State, Providence and Boise State in the last three spots, in that order (22-25).

However, some of my colleagues were apparently impressed enough with Saturday's 73-70 win at No. 2/3 Gonzaga to give the Cougars a nod.

BYU got 21 points in the AP Poll, which would rank them 30th, and five points in the USA Today Coaches Poll, which would rank them tied for 38th.

Gonzaga fell to No. 7 in both polls.
