Utah should proceed with Count My Vote elections — Salt Lake Tribune Editorial, Sunday

"If the Utah Republican Party can't run its own nominating apparatus any better than this, voters should seriously consider whether the party's candidates can be trusted to run our government.

"Party executives Wednesday issued yet another official squawk that they cannot handle the change in the ballot process set by last year's Senate Bill 54. That's the measure offered as a compromise to stop the oncoming train called Count My Vote.

"The party hierarchy continues to demand a delay in the change-over, waiting until at least 2018 instead of 2016. Otherwise, Party Chairman James Evans warns, they may not be able to put candidates on the ballot.

"Senators decided Tuesday that a deal is a deal.

"They killed legislation seen as an attempt to renege on a compromise made last year with organizers of the Count My Vote ballot initiative.

"Senators voted 9-19 to kill SB43, which would have delayed until after the 2016 elections a new law that allows candidates to qualify for a primary election either by gathering signatures, or through the caucus-convention system. ..."
