A man was critically hurt Saturday night after a car hit him in a Kearns crosswalk.

Witnesses have told investigators that the 62-year-old man, who lives in the city, was crossing 5400 South on the west side of its intersection with Northwest Avenue, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal. Witnesses also said he was crossing against a red light, Hoyal added.

About 8:15 p.m., a vehicle swerved to avoid him. But a second vehicle, a Lexus sedan, was behind the first one and hit the man, Hoyal said.

The man was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition. The 16-year-old girl who was driving the Lexus was not injured, the lieutenant said.

Unified police are still investigating the crash, and expected the intersection to remain closed until shortly before midnight.
