A 68-year-old man suffered critical injuries when his neighbor, wielding a hammer and a blade, attacked him in his yard in West Valley City late Wednesday afternoon, police say.

The suspect, a 19-year-old man, was spotted walking toward the victim's home, near 5600 West and 4835 South, and "behaving strangely," West Valley City police wrote in a press statement late Wednesday. The suspect approached the home as the victim came outside into the front yard.

A family member inside the house heard a "commotion" from the yard and looked outside to see the victim being attacked by the suspect.

The attack continued as the victim and suspect moved into the home before the suspect fled. He ran east, carrying the knife and hammer, and had a "verbal altercation" with another person about a block from the victim's home, police wrote.

The suspect ran about three blocks north, where police found him inside a house where he rents part of the basement.

The suspect was booked into jail on suspicion of attempted murder and aggravated residential burglary, first-degree felonies; three third-degree felony counts of aggravated assault; and misdemeanor resisting arrest.

The victim suffered head injuries and was in critical condition late Wednesday, police wrote.
