With Signing Day for the 2015 football class quickly approaching — the period begins Feb. 4 — BYU director of football personnel Geoff Martzen participated in a teleconference with reporters on Tuesday morning and spoke in general terms about the class the Cougars expect to sign in two weeks.

Obviously, Martzen did not discuss individual recruits — that's an NCAA violation — but he did mention that BYU expects to sign 25 players — the maximum allowed by the NCAA — the first Wednesday of next month.

Martzen said the Cougars currently have commitments from 17-18 players and openings for 7-8 more. Not sure if he was counting the four transfers who have signed that BYU announced Friday: Bryant "Squally" Canada, Eric Takenaka, Jackson Kaka and Kamel Greene.

As you can see on the chart I've listed below, I know of 15 commits. The most recent addition is running back Charles West, a 5-foot-9, 178-pounder from Coppell, Texas, who committed to BYU earlier this week. West is a big get for BYU, because hometown SMU and San Diego State were also in the mix.

It hasn't been all good news for the Cougars this week, however. Dayan Lake, a cornerback from Layton's Northridge High, has reportedly re-opened his recruitment, after having committed to BYU nearly two years ago. Lake, 5-11, 185, was seen as one of the gems of this year's recruiting class before his apparent change of heart.

He will still visit BYU on Jan. 29-30 when the Cougars hold their big recruiting weekend and take the prospects snowmobiling in Utah's mountains, so obviously BYU is still in the mix.

Martzen was asked about recommitments on Tuesday.

"It happens everywhere I have been," he said, while not denying the Lake news. "At Alabama we would have guys flip to Auburn the week before signing day. It is nothing that we are not used to here and everywhere else. It is tough, especially if you were counting on them and they have been committed for a long time. But these kids are making a huge decision and I don't blame them for taking every opportunity they can to really evaluate it and make sure this is the right place for them."

Martzen said to expect more drama in the next two weeks, something that has been missing the past few years for BYU leading up to signing day.

"Oh yeah, definitely," he said. "I think there are 7-8 guys that are either going to decide on signing day, or are going to decide here in the next two weeks that I think we are at least 50-50 on, so it could be fun."

Having locked up Snow's Eric Takenaka, the Cougars are only after one more junior college prospect, and it is not quarterback Trent Hosick, who committed last spring but said via Twitter that BYU is no longer in the running for his services. Martzen didn't mention him by name, but the juco star they are still pursuing is Khari Vanderbilt, a safety from San Jose (Calif.) City College. Vanderbilt committed to BYU a while ago, but is still being recruited by other schools, including Utah State.

"We are only recruiting one other JC kid. Whether he comes or not, I am not sure," Martzen said, obviously referring to Vanderbilt. "I think the ones we got are going to be huge. Takenaka is huge, and then the Washington State transfers are going to be really helpful for us. It is not the same emphasis as it was last year, of guys that can come in and play immediately. I think typically when you go to Juco [ranks] is when you need help now. We have a little bit of time to let these guys develop and turn into players, so we can go the high school route this year."

Speaking of quarterbacks, Martzen said he believes the Cougars are set at the position for awhile, although they will go through spring ball in March without the injured Taysom Hill and Tanner Mangum, who doesn't return home from his mission until the summer.

"We got the two quarterbacks in this class that we wanted," he said, referencing Kody Wilstead and Beau Hoge. "Those guys are locked in and are coming. One [Wilstead] is going on a mission for two years and the other [Hoge] is going to come in and play right away. So yeah, in the fall we will have Taysom and Tanner, of course, and then the freshman kid [Hoge] and then we are sending the other guy on a mission. I think we will be great at quarterback for the next few years."

Enough for now. I'll have more from Martzen in a few days.
