Is Carlos Salcedo set for a move to his hometown club? According to a Christmas Day report, the 21-year-old Real Salt Lake defender is going to sign with Mexican club giant Chivas de Guadalajara. In a report by Mario Aguirre of FOX Deportes, Salcedo's agent Oskar Olsen told FOX Sports that Salcedo will sign with Chivas to either a 3-or-4-year contract.

However, Salcedo remains under contract with RSL, even after taking to social media on Nov. 24 to voice his displeasure with former general manager Garth Lagerwey. In a written statement on his Twitter account, Salcedo asked that RSL not pick up his option for the 2015 Major League Soccer season. The club did not comply. RSL picked up Salcedo's club option and eventually pulled him off the unprotected list during the 2014 Expansion Draft once New York City FC drafted former midfielder Ned Grabavoy. Subsequently, NYCFC and Jason Kreis later took Chris Wingert.

The FOX Deportes report also stated that Salcedo holds an offer from a European club, one that could conceivably trump the offer of contract from Chivas. The report said along with offers from Chivas, clubs like Mexico's Cruz Azul, German club FC Koln and Dutch club FC Twente submitted offers for the RSL-Arizona Academy product. The report from FOX Deportes did not specify a potential transfer fee from RSL.

On Tuesday, RSL technical director Craig Waibel told the Tribune that the lines of communication remain open between the two sides.

"We continue to talk to Carlos about his situation," Waibel said. "We see the rumors, the same way everyone else does, which is interesting. At the same time, the relationship is, by no stretch of the imagination, broken. There's a lot of discussion, but we're trying to make sure we make the best decision for the club, first and foremost."

A native of Guadalajara and a former member of the Chivas academy, Salcedo spent the last two seasons in MLS with RSL. The versatile defender stepped into action in 2014 at center back and right back due to injuries to Chris Schuler and Tony Beltran. Salcedo appeared in 12 league matches, starting eight and scoring a goal. He became a regular with the Mexican U-21 national team and played in the Central American and Caribbean Games with El Tri.

In 2013, Salcedo appeared in 13 league matches and started 12 in his rookie year with RSL.

Salcedo's likely departure continues what has been a frenzied offseason for RSL. Grabavoy, Wingert and Sebastian Velasquez have joined NYCFC either through draft or trade. Nat Borchers was traded to the Portland Timbers on Dec. 8 and Jamison Olave was reacquired by the club from the New York Red Bulls two days later. Throw in the exit of Lagerwey — reportedly to Seattle — and the appointment of Waibel and what was expected to be a busy offseason has certainly lived up to the billing.
