A good Samaritan motorcyclist, run down as he helped a stranded motorist change a tire on State Road 201, had been upgraded Friday to serious condition.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce indicated that the man — initially in critical condition following the 2:30 p.m. Thursday accident near the highway's intersection with 3400 West — had been stabilized and was expected to recover.

The driver of the car with the flat tire had pulled over to the left side, but was still partially blocking the inside lane when another vehicle rear-ended it. The motorcyclist was flown to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray by helicopter.

Five others, with less-serious injuries — including two women and two young children inside the disabled vehicle, and the driver of the second car — were taken to hospitals by ground ambulance for treatment.

The crash closed for three lanes of traffic on eastbound SR-201 for more than three hours.
