Intermountain Healthcare is laying off more than 50 software engineers, opting to use an outside supplier to develop information-technology applications.

The Salt Lake City-based health care system informed 52 employees at its West Valley location of the move last week, according to an email from Daron Coowley, Intermountain spokesman.

Intermountain has historically developed its own software, but Cowley said in the email that there now are "good options" outside the company.

"Intermountain is not in the business of software development; we're in the business of healthcare, so it makes sense for Intermountain to increase its reliance on highly efficient and effective suppliers to perform software development tasks," he said.

That supplier is CSC, a Virginia-based company, Cowley said, adding that the firm maintains an office in the Orem-Lindon area. And Intermountain will retain 216 in-house software engineers after this change, according to an email.

The layoffs take effect March 1 and those affected can apply for 17 information-technology positions currently open, the email states.

The employees also may be offered severance "depending on factors, such as tenure," Cowley added.

"Intermountain is working closely with these employees in finding new opportunities and supporting them during this transition," he said
