Former Utah Gov. Olene Walker, honored for her focus on education and her impact on politics, also displayed her signature sense of humor Friday at the YWCA's annual Leader Luncheon.

Walker rose from a wheelchair to stand at the lectern and accept the Mary Schubach McCarthey Lifetime Achievement Award, awarded just twice before. After thanking the YWCA and those in attendance for their support of women's issues and urging them to do good in the world, the 84-year-old advised, "Don't get old." And, referring to her focus on health care during her 10 years as Utah's first female lieutenant governor, she noted: "Little did I know in the seven years I worked on Medicaid that I would use it so often."

Educator Carolyn Goodwin Schubach; U. professor and refugee advocate Rosemarie Hunter; Linda Leckman, vice president of Intermountain Healthcare; and attorney Peggy Tomsic were honored with outstanding achievement awards at the event, held at the Grand America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City.
