A high school student in Salem has been diagnosed with whooping cough, according to Utah County Heath Deparment managers.

The case has not yet been deemed an outbreak, health department spokesman Lance Madigan said, but residents are encouraged to monitor themselves for symptoms including a head cold or a heavy, persistant cough.

"It's pretty common that we have pertussis, or whooping cough, floating around," Madigan said. "It's one of those diseases that doesn't go away."

Whooping cough is treatable among teenagers and adults, Madigan said, but the disease can be deadly for infants and small children.

He said letters were sent home to parents of Salem Hills High School students, but the department had not yet recommended that children be excused from school.

"The biggest recommendation we have is just to make sure your vaccinations are up to date," he said.
