Two year-round elementary schools in Jordan School District will return to a traditional nine-month calendar this fall following a 5-1 vote by the Jordan Board of Education on Tuesday.

The change at Herriman Elementary and Butterfield Canyon Elementary is expected to be temporary, with both schools likely returning to a year-round schedule in as little as two years as student populations increase.

District officials polled parents and found overwhelming support for moving to a traditional schedule at the schools — even if the change is short-term.

That same survey found that teachers at the two schools largely oppose a switch. But Jordan Education Association President Jennifer Boehme said despite some concerns, educators are pleased with the actions of the school board.

"We're fine with the school board's decision because of the steps that they took in surveying the community," she said.

Boehme said many educators prefer a year-round schedule, which includes time off throughout the year in place of a large summer break.

Traditional calendars also operate on a different pay schedule than year-round schools, Boehme said, which can result in teachers being unpaid for the month of August during a transition year.

"Some teachers are going to leave," Boehme said. "They're going to transfer to a school that has a schedule they prefer."

Jordan District spokeswoman Sandra Riesgraf said board members are aware of concerns about the decision, but they felt the overwhelming support by parents required a return to a traditional calendar.

She said the district is looking at options for mitigating the effects of the transition, particularly the issue of teacher pay.

"I think the board was in agreement that they want to work that out before this change happens so that teachers are not impacted in that way," Riesgraf said.

The vote by the school board changes only the 2015-2016 school year, she added, but the switch to a traditional schedule is expected to continue for two years. The district will monitor population growth before making a decision about future academic years.
