With a unanimous vote on Thursday, the Ogden Board of Education selected Sandy Caroles as the new superintendent of the Ogden School District. Caroles previously served as the district's assistant superintendent and was named interim superintendent following the departure of Brad Smith in October to become Utah's state superintendent of public instruction.

Caroles has 30 years of education experience, including 25 years in the Ogden School District. Her appointment is a shift back to a superintendent with an education background. Smith is an attorney.

"I am excited this opportunity to serve has been made permanent," Caroles said in a prepared statement. "I have enjoyed the last few months as interim and appreciate the support of many as we made a smooth transition in leadership. I look forward to moving the school district forward and empowering excellence in all."

Caroles joined the Ogden School District in 1989 as a special education teacher, according to district spokesman Zach Williams, and has worked as a counselor and elementary school principal. She holds a degree in elementary education from Weber State University and a master's degree in psychology from Utah State University. She is the district's 16th superintendent.
