Voters in the Canyons School District ousted two of the three remaining inaugural Board of Education members in Tuesday's election, according to unofficial results.

Challenger Clareen Arnold beat incumbent Tracy Cowdell with 55 percent of the vote, while Amber Shill defeated incumbent Kim Horiuchi with 52 percent of the vote.

Board President Sherril Taylor survived a challenge from Andrew Boyce with 54 percent of the vote, and Steve Wrigley, who was first elected after the district was created, beat Cole Hansen with 61 percent of the vote.

In Salt Lake City School District, candidates spoke of a need to restore public trust after the lunches of 17 Uintah Elementary students were seized and thrown away in January.

The incident led to a change in how the district serves students with low account balances for meals.

"It blew up so fast and became such a big issue so quickly," said candidate Weston Clark.

Clark lost to Melissa Ford, who had 57 percent of the votes, in Salt Lake City's Precinct 6, the seat currently held by Ford's aunt, Laurel Young. Also in Salt Lake City, Katherine Kennedy beat Jorge Robles with 68 percent in the open Precinct 3 seat and incumbent Rosemary Emery had 71 percent of the vote, easily defeating challenger Mark Maxfield in Precinct 4.

Three seats were up for election in Jordan School District, where Susan Pulsipher was the only incumbent seeking re-election.

Pulsipher beat Roy Harward in District 3 with 71 percent of the vote. Matthew Young won 52 percent of the vote, defeating Gary Hansen for the District 2 seat. Sixty-five percent of the votes in District 7 went to Jen Atwood, who beat Teresa Atherly.

In Granite School District, newcomer Karyn Hermansen had a resounding victory over Royce Gibson, garnering 70 percent of the vote in District 6. Incumbents Connie Burgess, Terry Bawden and Gayleen Gandy ran unopposed.
