A firefighter who plunged as many as 25 feet Thursday while working a hose line suffered only minor injuries.

The man apparently slipped on loose dirt while battling the Mill Hollow wildfire in the Roosevelt area. He fell about 20 to 25 feet and did a somersault, according to spokeswoman Venetia Gempler.

The firefighter was transported by helicopter to University Hospital where he was monitored overnight. He was released Friday morning and is recuperating.

Fire crews have been working to secure the eastern flank of the fire, and a specialized wildland fire team has taken over managing the blaze.

At last estimate the Mill Hollow fire encompassed about 533 acres in the Ashley National Forest. There are 68 firefighters, two helicopters, three engines and two water-tenders assigned to the fire, according to a news release.

Crews worked Thursday to keep the blaze away from Flat Ridge Spring drainage, and they closed a few roads and trails along the east and north end of Cat's Peak.
