CEDAR CITY - An 18-year-old worker in Iron County was injured Monday morning when a rock dislodged in a trench and pinned his leg against a backhoe bucket.
Sheriff Mark Gower said crews were laying sewer pipe in a 12-foot-deep trench along the Parowan Gap Road when the boulder apparently rolled into an open end of a safety box the worker was in and pinned his leg. The safety box, Gower explained, has two steel sides to protect crews from a collapse of the trench walls but is open at the ends.
"They were using all the safety precautions they could, when something not planned for happened." The unidentified worker was taken to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City. His condition was unknown. - Mark Havnes
