A 48-year-old man was crushed to death Friday night when the tractor he was operating flipped and pinned him underneath.

The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office responded to the emergency about 6:45 p.m. near 3300 South and 8900 West, said Lt. Paul Jaroscak.

The man was using an old tractor and a chain to pull a tree stump out of the ground when the tractor flipped over backwards. The owner of the property, who uses a wheelchair, heard a loud noise and the tractor stop. He called police.

It took fire crews about two hours to lift the tractor off of the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies were trying to contact the man's family Friday night. His name has not been released. - Jason Bergreen
