A natural gas leak in Kearns affected 10 homes around 12:45 p.m. Friday.

Two houses were evacuated and the people in eight others were sheltered until the leak was fixed. The three-inch Questar gas main was punctured when construction crews drilled through it near the intersection of 5080 West and 5400 South.

During initial testing, the crews found high levels of natural gas in three sewer manhole covers. Questar officials fixed the leak and the people were returned to their homes.

Natural gas can ignite if it reaches pilot lights from furnaces or water heaters. - Lindsay Whitehurst
