West Nile virus has been detected in Salt Lake County, less than a week after Kane County reported a crow had tested positive for the virus.

Salt Lake Valley Health Department reported Wednesday that the virus was found in six of its 10 mosquito test pools in wetlands outside Salt Lake City. The Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District will begin spraying over the next few days.

Public health officials said residents need to do their part, too, including wearing mosquito repellent from dusk until dawn.

Other prevention measures include:

* Wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants while outdoors.

* Removing standing water in tires or other containers to eliminate mosquito breeding areas.

Most people infected with the virus will have no symptoms. Some will develop flu-like symptoms. And less than 1 percent could develop a headache, paralysis and other brain or spinal cord illnesses.

There were 70 human cases in Utah last year and two deaths.
