Authorities say Michael J. Doyel strangled his ex-girlfriend and bound her in bungee cords before driving her body to Missouri last month.

On Monday, prosecutors charged Doyel with murder and two other felonies in the death of Deborah Jones, 50.

In court documents, investigators wrote that Jones' son, Jeffery Jones, said Doyel had been harassing Deborah Jones after she ended the couple's live-in relationship early in April. Doyel sent plumbers and contractors to her home on fake calls and posted "demeaning information" about her on the Internet, her son told police.

Other witnesses said Doyel had been harassing Jones at the hospital where she worked and was harassing her co-workers and patients.

Jones began steps toward a protective order against Doyel, claiming he also had stolen money from her bank account, police wrote.

On April 17, police wrote, Jones spoke with an acquaintance and sounded "anxious" and "hurried" on the phone. A few hours after the call, Jones and Doyel went to a restaurant together, police wrote. Doyel later said he was leery Jones met with him for dinner to "set him up with the police," investigators wrote.

Doyel said Jones was strangled to death at 4115 S. Redwood Road, police wrote; the address is listed as a restaurant in phone directories. Court documents do not indicate Doyel admitted to strangling her. He said he then bought a 50-gallon plastic storage container, tarp, cord and deodorant.

Patricia Murray, the mentally disabled victim in a kidnapping with which Doyel also was charged, said he picked her up April 18 and drove her to a restaurant. Murray said she spotted the plastic container in the backseat of the car, and it appeared to be empty, police wrote. Doyel left Murray at the restaurant and returned several hours later. Murray said the storage container had been filled with something and was bound with bungee cords, police said.

Doyel said he had tied up Jones' body, put it in the container and covered it with the tarp and some clothing, police wrote. He said he used deodorant and cleaner to cover the smell of her body.

On April 19, Doyel drove Murray to Branson, Mo., where police found Jones' body in the plastic container in the back seat of her Volkswagen Passat. The car was parked at a hotel where police found Doyel and Murray.

Doyel admitted to using Jones' cell phone to send text messages to Jones' friends and family, pretending to be Jones and assuring them Jones was alive and safe, police wrote.

Doyel was charged with first-degree felony murder and obstructing justice and theft of Jones' car, both second-degree felonies.
