Posted: 12:39 PM- Park City Manager Tom Bakaly has tapped the public-safety director from the southern Utah city of Ivins as the new police chief for Utah's most popular ski town.
Wade Carpenter will take the helm of the Park City Police Department on July 1 as Chief Lloyd Evans retires.
Carpenter, a 19-year law-enforcement veteran, has been the director of public safety in Ivins since 2002. He served in a similar position at Brian Head from 1995 to 2002. Before that, he worked for the Layton Police Department.
"He has a lot of the technical skills we were looking for," Bakaly said. "His management philosophy impressed us -- hands on and leading from the front."
Carpenter said his experience at Brian Head and Ivins has prepared him for the job in the town that plays host to the Sundance Film Festival and tens of thousands of tourists at a time.
"My background is in resort policing," he said, noting that Ivins puts on many large events, too, such as the World Senior Games.
Carpenter said he will continue Park City's approach to "community policing" by building and maintaining good communication with residents from neighborhood to neighborhood.
"When there is a problem or an issue," he said, "the community helps solve the problem."
