Community collection events began April 10 in Sandy and will continue at key valley locations all summer in addition to the permanent waste disposal sites operated by the county.
"This year we have initiated a program to accept old medications at all of our community collection days," said Dorothy Adams, who oversees the county's household hazardous waste program.
"We hope this will encourage residents to properly dispose of their prescriptions and protect the environment from careless contamina- tion."
When discarded pharmaceuticals are flushed down the toilet or the drain, they can contaminate drinking water supplies. At the community waste collections, police can legally collect and dispose of the forfeited drugs. - Judy Fahys
