Salt Lake City Council members this week unanimously approved the name change of Mayor Ralph Becker's domestic-partner-ship registry to the mutual-commitment registry.
Several council members thanked Becker for fighting for the ordinance, saying it was the right thing to do.
"It took a lot of guts to do this, mayor, with the climate at the Legislature," Councilman Luke Garrott said. "I appreciate the courage."
A newly passed state law prompted the name change.
The registry will serve as a catalog of city residents, either same-sex couples or otherwise, who can add their names as long as they provide proof that they cohabitate and rely on one another as dependents. It will serve as a resource for businesses when determining whether to issue insurance benefits.
