Posted: 5:35 PM- Six weeks after an earthquake shook Wells, Nev., residents are raising money to rebuild homes and repair the town.

A rally begins there at 10 a.m. Saturday. A town-wide barbecue begins at noon. Other festivities include hot air balloon rides and an auction of donated goods.

The town is trying to raise $500,000 in private money to assist the town government, the local school district and residents who suffered losses in the 6.0 earthquake on Feb. 21. About $300,000 has been raised thus far, said Elko County Commissioner Mike Nannini.

"We're going to try to help ourselves a little bit," he said.

Nannini, who also operates a truck stop and casino in Wells, said the county has been told it does not qualify for federal disaster assistance.

Nearly everyone suffered some kind of damage to their home or personal possessions.

Wells Mayor Rusty Tybo said two families remain displaced. Work crews are still tearing down chimneys and cleaning debris.

"We've gotten everybody pretty much stabilized, but there's ongoing construction needs," Tybo said.

Nannini said fundraisers already have reached out to alumni of Wells' high school and people who attend the town's annual July car show.

Anyone wishing to donate should mail payments to Nevada State Bank, P.O. Box 308, Wells, NV 89835. Make checks payable to: Wells Nevada Earthquake Fund.
