Weisser, 52, will be arraigned Friday in 3rd District Court for attempted rape, a first-degree felony, and class B misdemeanor assault in connection with the March 16 attack.
According to charging documents, Weisser entered a bedroom in the home and attempted to have sex with the woman, who repeatedly told him no and and fought him off.
As she was attempting to get away, Weisser dragged her into a door jamb, causing slight abrasions to her hip, court documents said.
The woman made it to a locked room, where she called her brother, who called police. The woman is an adult relative of Weisser. The Salt Lake Tribune generally does not named alleged sexual assault victims.
Weisser was booked into the Salt Lake County jail, where he was being held today in lieu of $150,000 bail. His first court appearance will be before Judge Royal Hansen in West Jordan.
The day after the alleged attack, the woman obtained a temporary protective order from a judge. A hearing on that matter is set for April 2.
Church moderator Margaret Keiffer said today, "We love Scott and believe him to be an honorable man. It was with great regret that we accepted his letter of resignation."
Asked about replacing Weisser, who has been pastor since 2004, Keiffer said, "We have not gotten to anything like that yet."
In a letter of resignation written from jail, Weisser said church members "cannot afford to deal with this personal drama of mine that has gone so wrong."
He apologized for having "botched the gracious gift of God" that was his ministry, and said he had brought "disrepute upon the church."
