The 24-member group took home the Most Distinguished Delegation award at the mock U. N. conference among 150 student teams from high schools worldwide. The 16- to 18-year-olds from the high school in Cottonwood Heights were among about 2,700 students attending the competition.
High school teams prepare for months to present the views of the country they were assigned, come up with U.N. resolutions and then vote on them. The Brighton team was assigned the country Denmark.
"The students did extremely well," said Jim Hodges, a Brighton teacher and Model U.N. adviser. Brighton, which also won top honors five years ago, was the only Utah team at the event. The Brighton team won regional honors last year.
"We were really well-prepared going into this," said Brighton senior Morgaine Fehlauer, president of the team.
"Hours and hours of research went into this, for everybody," she said.
"We're just really excited,' said Joshua Dunlap, a senior on the team. "It's been a good year."
