West Valley police arrived at 3687 S. Highlander Street (6885 West) shortly after 8 p.m. to find Dylan Damron in critical condition from stab wounds. Witnesses said 18-year-old Brandon Raney pulled a knife from his pocket and stabbed Damron, after the two exchanged words over an alleged fight scheduled to take place at Cyprus High School today.
Damron told Raney several "cowboys" planned to jump Raney at school for some reason and made remarks about it, said Matt Westbury, 16, and Daniel Riley, 15, who witnessed the altercation between the two teenagers.
Raney, who was at Damron's home to retrieve some property, grew angry about Damron's remarks and stabbed the boy, they said.
A knife used in the stabbing was recovered at the scene, said Lt. Dalan Taylor of the West Valley City Police Department Raney waited at the scene for authorities to arrive after he stabbed Damron, Taylor said.
Westbury and Riley said they were surprised by Raney's actions and said Damron and Raney were "pretty good friends."
Damron lived at the home where he was stabbed along with Westbury and Riley and Tammy Riley, who is the boys' guardian, she said.
Damron was flown by helicopter to University Hospital in critical condition. Tammy Riley said she was told Damron's condition had improved to "stable" by late Wednesday.
Raney was taken into custody but hadn't yet been booked into the Salt Lake County jail late Wednesday, Taylor said.
