Posted: 1:10 PM- In Utah, where they have been the minority party for a quarter-century, Democrats usually try to stay away from primaries and internal challenges.

But there's a fight shaping up in state Senate District 1, a solidly Democratic area in west Salt Lake City.

Incumbent Sen. Fred Fife is being challenged by Luz Robles, former director of the state's Ethnic Affairs Office. Fife has served a single four-year term in the Senate. Previously he served eight years in the state House.

Fife says there is no surprise about Robles filing for the office today - the opening day of a 10-day candidate filing period running through March 17.

"She's been working at it for about a year, so it's going to be stiff competition," Fife said.

Senate District 1, which includes the communities of Rose Park, Glendale and Poplar Grove, has long been represented by a Democrat. The exception was from 2000-2002, when Republican firebrand James Evans was elected to the seat following a Democratic rift.
