The pound of the gavel had just signaled the end of the 2008 Legislative session when Sen. Bill HIckman, R-St. George, announced his retirement.
"There's a time and a place for everything and today is the time and place. I just want to tell the body that it's been an honor to serve in the Utah Senate," Hickman said. "It's time to say goodbye," Hickman continued. "And that's what I'm doing tonight. After 16 years it has to be."
Hickman was elected to the House in 1992 where he served until winning a Senate seat in 2000.
This year he was best known for sponsoring SB81, the immigration reform bill that took up hours of debate and went through many versions before it passed. cmckitrick@sltrib.com
