Posted: 11:27 PM- PROVO - An explosion injured several people and could be heard for miles around a Provo metalworking business Sunday night.

Three people were taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, with non-life threatening injuries after an explosion about 9:45 p.m. at Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Co., 2550 S. Industrial Parkway, said Utah County sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon. One victim may have had severe burns. Others with minor injuries were treated at the scene.

All workers in the plant were accounted for, and no fatalities were reported, Cannon said. He had no further details late Sunday evening about the cause of the explosion or the exact number of people injured. It was not clear how many people were working at the plant at the time of the explosion.

The extent of the damage to the plant also was not known. However, Cannon said, the explosion was audible from the sheriff's office in Provo, more than 3 miles from the plant.

Security at Pacific States declined to comment.

Pacific States produces pipe in 6-inch to 30-inch diameters, according to its Web site, www.pscipco.com. The plant recently upgraded its melting process, the Web site said.

Pacific States was founded in 1926. Its Provo foundry serves Utah and thirteen western states, western Canada and the Pacific Rim. The company had made fittings, valves and hydrants in the past, but shut down that part of the operation in 1982 to focus on the production of pipe only.

In May, the company was awarded the Reed Smoot Outstanding Business of the Year Award for 2007 by the Provo -Orem Chamber of Commerce.

Pacific States is a division of McWane, Inc., a plumbing manufacturer based in Birmingham, Ala.
