Before the current Utah Legislative session began, fishing groups worried that a bill proposed by Rep. Mike Noel, R-Kanab, might force the Division of Wildlife Resources to purchase trout from private hatcheries or that private fish farmers would have less protection against such ailments as whirling disease that threaten wild trout.

Those concerns proved unfounded when HB148 was presented Wednesday to a House committee, which passed the measure through favorably. All the bill does is make minor changes to the makeup of the Fish Health Board as well as clarify some enforcement issues on private fish ponds.
