Bill will tighten foundation accounting

Legislators are hoping to prevent any more theft from school district foundations with a bill aimed at strengthening accounting procedures.

The House Education Committee on Wednesday passed HB112, which would require school district foundations to report certain financial information to schools and follow certain accounting procedures. District foundations seek money from private donations to give to schools.

Rep. Sheryl Allen, R-Bountiful, sponsored the bill in response to several incidents last year. Former Weber School District Foundation employee Denise Aughney pleaded guilty last year to embezzling more than $1 million from the foundation. In October, a legislative audit showed school district foundations across the state are in need of more oversight and guidance.

The bill will now go to the House floor for consideration. - Lisa Schencker
