The break affected more than 1,800 residents who live near 12th Street through the city's north section to the city limits, according to the City of Ogden's Water Utility Division.
Workers responded to a leak on a 3-foot pipe early this morning, said George Benford, Ogden's public services director. He said he expected repairs to take most of today into the early hours of Friday.
"It's not clear how long it's going to take. It's a significant break that's going to take a long time to fix," Benford said.
Residents in the affected areas were without water or experienced a drop in water pressure, he said.
The lack of water was prompting many residents to improvise, include employees at the Trinity Mission Wide Horizons Residential Care Facility, which is home to about 80 developmentally disabled patients.
A nurse reached at the facility this evening said employees brought in cases of bottled water and put water in containers to help patients bathe and wash their hands.
The facility has a 200-gallon water tank to use should repairs to the water main leave Trinity Mission, 910 Monroe Blvd., without water for longer than expected, the nurse said.
