Off the Agenda: Quick-tempered councilman shows his softer side

Salt Lake County District Attorney Lohra Miller seemed doomed to more debate about her 2008 budget bump last week when sometimes-hot-tempered County Councilman Mark Crockett, a fellow Republican, urged a little more love.

"I'd like to buy the world a Coke," he said. "It seems that we have been around this enough. Can't we just get along?"

Crockett's charm must have worked. The councilman didn't cough up change for a Coke, but his lighthearted, let's-be-friends approach put the D.A.'s partisan-bruised budget to bed.

Question is: Will the Republican be so peace-loving this election season when he must defend his east-side council seat? He may want to treat his opponent to a Jolt instead.

Billings' little buddy

When Provo Mayor Lewis Billings spoke to the Provo-Orem Chamber of Commerce recently, one almost thought he was going to give an LDS Primary talk.

Billings' first act was to put a cutout drawing of a little girl on the front of his lectern. After talking about transportation issues and economic development, Billings then introduced everyone to "Flat Dulcé."

He explained that he had been "adopted" by a girl named Dulcé from Covina, Calif. Billings said the girl had read A decimal point can be rather insignificant - unless you're talking money, then it can be as big as Mount Everest, as Springville City Councilman Ben Jolley learned.

After agreeing to hire Edwards & Daniels Architects - for $6,000 - to draw up conceptual plans for the city's new community center, Jolley inadvertently slid the decimal place three places to the left when he made the motion. He moved to hire the architects for $6. He was corrected by Chuck Keeler, parks director. "That's quite a deal," Jolley said of his original statement.
