OGDEN - Mayor Matthew Godfrey promised "great things" as he was sworn in Monday for a third term.

But he used his brief remarks not to lay out a vision for the next four years, but to thank voters for giving him the responsibility of leading Ogden for four more years.

"It's a big deal to elect somebody for 12 years to one office," said Godfrey.

Also sworn in Monday were two new council members, Blain Johnson and Caitlin Gochnour. They replaced Councilwoman Susie Van Hooser, who lost a bid to unseat Godfrey, and Rick Safsten, who did not seek re-election after serving two terms.

Johnson is an attorney and Gochnour is a community volunteer.

The new council also elected its leaders, choosing as chairwoman Amy Wicks, a council member who often is at odds with Godfrey.

Wicks had been vice chairwoman the past two years under Chairman Jesse Garcia, who ended up backing her bid for the top spot.

The council chose as vice chairman Doug Stephens, seen as a middle-of-the-road council member, over Brandon Stephenson, a Godfrey ally.

Godfrey did not talk about his goals for the coming four years, but said he's a "lucky man" to be surrounded by a supportive family and city staffers "who work tremendous hours to make great things happen for this city."
