Todd D. Lindley, 43, had responded to a call to transport a patient to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo when he was arrested about 1 a.m., Utah County Sheriff's Lt. Darren Gilbert.
Lindley allegedly picked up the ambulance at the city's storage building, then drove it to Mountain View Hospital. EMTs, but no patients, were on board, Gilbert said.
EMTs and Mountain View staff noticed Lindley acting strangely and smelled alcohol, Gilbert said. A sheriff's deputy arrived and administered a sobriety test. Gilbert said Lindley tested at about three times the legal limit.
Lindley was released from the Utah County jail after posting $1,300 bail. No charges have been filed.
Lindley could not be reached for comment Thursday.
A Payson city secretary said Lindley has resigned. He had been a volunteer ambulance driver since 1992.
