Longtime Monticello City Manager Trent Schafer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an audit of the southeastern Utah city's finances.

Mayor Doug Allen said Monday it became clear last week that something was not quite right with Monticello's finances when several city bills became past due.

However, he noted, Monticello officials are not calling for a criminal investigation and presently there is no evidence of wrongdoing.

Allen said he would "rather not" provide further details about irregularities with the city's financial records or exactly what led the City Council to lock Schafer out of his office.

The mayor and council have asked state officials to audit Monticello's books. Allen said he hoped that task could begin next week.

Schafer could not be reached for comment Monday. - Christopher Smart
