After last week's political theatrics, maybe the Salt Lake County Council should reconsider its refusal to fund a public-information officer for first-year District Attorney Lohra Miller. She probably needs one.
Her high-profile plea for more prosecutors - less than 24 hours before her budget presentation - seemed to aggravate the council.
Democratic Councilman Jim Bradley booed her news-conference performance. So did his left-leaning colleague Jenny Wilson, who said she would appreciate more dialogue and less grandstanding. Even Republican Councilman Mark Crockett said he would like to see that kind of political drama disappear.
The Republican D.A.'s lone cheerleader seemed to be Democratic Councilman Joe Hatch, who described himself as an admirer of a ''very well-done, very well-orchestrated grandstand.''
"Spoken as a grandstander yourself," piped in GOP Councilman David Wilde.
But even Hatch began to reconsider the council's cut of a P.R. guru when Miller exclaimed that with 10 to 15 media inquiries daily, she needs someone to "control" the media.
"Control the press?" Hatch responded. "I was against it until I heard that phrase."
But, apparently, it wasn't enough. The D.A. got four new prosecutors but no one to keep those press pit bulls at bay.
Rocky makes green list
Besides sharing a savvy-politician knack, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson have another thing in common: All made the "Our Green Cities" list of the country's top mayors for sustainability.
Anderson, long recognized for his efforts to combat climate change, joins a group of 15 mayors "who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to promote their city's respective sustainability efforts," the organization's Web page reads.
All of the mayors on the list were praised because they "get it" when it comes to protecting the environment.
Other honorees include city leaders from Portland, Seattle, Denver, Albuquerque, Grand Rapids and Philadelphia.
